Educar para la ciudadanía democrática parece ser la meta de las sociedades pluralistas, pero no para cualquier forma de organización democrática, sino la que entienda que el ejercicio de la autonomía personal y la formación dialógica de la voluntad son indispensables. Para alcanzar tal meta parece necesario cultivar el capital humano (destrezas técnicas y conocimientos), el capital social (habilidades sociales) y la prudencia para desarrollar una vida buena. Pero no sólo eso, también un sentido de la justicia, ejercido en el (...) marco del mutuo reconocimiento, en el marco de un diálogo no sólo lógico, sino también sentiente. Depois da viragem do século, podemos dizer que a noção de responsabilidade social está muito em voga no mundo empresarial, muito embora, como é evidente, o conceito possui uma história muito mais ampla e profunda. Tendo isso em conta, o presente artigo procura, antes de mais, mostrar a evolução mais recente do conceito de responsabilidade social, ao mesmo tempo que demonstra como um tal conceito não seña mais do que um efeito de cosmética caso não estivesse fundado numa verdadeira ética (...) empresarial Nesse sentido, a autora oferece-nos alguns dos elementos filosóficos subjacentes a uma tal ética, elementos esses que se destinam a permitir uma avaliação de três dos principais modelos de empresa que identifica, a saber: o modelo economicista, o modelo institucional, e, finalmente, o modelo centrado na globalidade dos afectados pela actividade empresarial. O objectivo, naturalmente, é mostrar as razões pelas quais, numa perspectiva filosófica, a opção correcta é aquela que tem em vista o último dos três modelos mencionados. The concept of social responsibility has been much in vogue in the entrepreneurial world after the turn of the century, though the concept has a much larger and profound history. Taking this into account, the paper seeks to present, first of all, the most recent evolution of the concept of social responsibility and, simultaneously, demonstrates how such a concept would be nothing more than a cosmetic effect, if it were not based on a true entreprenewrial ethics. Thus, the author presents some of the philosophical elements underlying such an ethics; these elements intend to allow an evaluation of the three main enterprise models, which she identifies, namely the economicist model, the institutional model, and, finally, the model centred on all those affected by the entrepreneurial activity. Obviously, the aim of the paper is to present the reasons why, in a philosophical perspective, the right choice is the one which opts for the last of the tree mentioned models. (shrink)

Although contemporary methods of environmental regulation have registered some significant accomplishments, the current system of environmental law is not working well enough. First the good news: Since the first Earth Day in 1970, smog has decreased in the United States by thirty percent. The number of lakes and rivers safe for fishing and swimming has increased by one-third. Recycling has begun to reduce levels of municipal waste. Ocean dumping has been curtailed. Forests have begun to expand. One success story is (...) the virtual elimination of airborne lead in the United States. Another is the rapid phase-out of ozone-layer depleting chemicals worldwide. Nevertheless, prominent commentators of diverse political persuasions agree in an assessment that conventional models of environmental law have “failed.” Many environmental problems remain unsolved: species extinction, global desertification and deforestation, possible global climate change, and continuing severe air and water pollution in urban areas and poor countries. What is more, successful environmental protection has come only at enormous economic cost. By the year 2000, the Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the United States will spend approximately two percent of its gross national product on environmental pollution control. Academic economists have pointed out the nonsensical inefficiency of many environmental regulations, but usually to no avail. (shrink)

Pero para emprender ese camino es preciso optar por una ética que reconozca que lleva la intersubjetividad entrañada en su seno, porque es consciente de que no somos individuos aislados, sino que devenimos personas desde el reconocimiento recíproco como interlocutores válidos, (...) como seres dotados de dignidad y no un simple precio, como quienes son carne de la misma carne y hueso del mismo hueso. One of the essential tasks of bioethics in morally pluralistic societies consists of fostering a public use of reason in its field of competence. This is the fundamental thesis of the present work. To deal with it I will try to answer two crucial questions: What is moral pluralism and why does it demand fostering the use of public reason in moral issues in the sphere of bioethics and What are the laboratories of bioethics in a pluralistic society?

The primary appeal of stakeholder theory in business ethics derives from its promise to help solve two large and often morally difficult problems: (1) how to manage people fairly and efficiently and (2) how to determine the extent of a firm's moral responsibilities beyond its obligations to enhance its profits and economic value. This article investigates a variety of conceptual quandaries that stakeholder theory faces in addressing these two general problems. It argues that these quandaries pose intractable obstacles for stakeholder (...) theory which prevent it from delivering on its large promises. Acknowledging that various versions of stakeholder theory have made a contribution in elucidating the complex nature of firms and business decision making, the article argues that it is time to move on. More precise explications of the nature of modern firms focusing on the application of basic moral principles to different business contexts and situations are likely to prove more accurate and useful. Why “aporophobia”—rejection of the poor—is one of the most serious problems facing the world today, and how we can fight it In this revelatory book, acclaimed political philosopher Adela Cortina makes an unprecedented assertion: the biggest problem facing the world today is the rejection of poor people. Examining the theoretical and empirical status of applied ethics, this volume demonstrates how a pluralistic and democratic society can deal with ethical issues in the light of its moral conscience.

Starting with the hypothesis that during this first decade of the 21st century a certain territorial culture has spread that implies greater awareness of landscape on the part of the authorities, the economic and social agents who exercise a degree of leadership in territorial matters and the general public, this article sets out to analyse the possibility that a new ethics of landscape is beginning to take shape. The notion of landscape as proposed by the European Convention in Florence in (...) 2000 looks at the idea of the social construction of landscape. In this new paradigm, landscape is conceived as a social product, the cultural projection of a society in a given space from a material, spiritual and symbolic standpoint. Landscape is understood to be inherently dynamic and changing. When the elements that give a particular landscape its historical and cultural continuity are suddenly removed and its sense of place is lost, we are seeing not evolution in the landscape but its destruction. And the very idea of intervention in these landscapes gives rise to the need for principles and moral values that will provide guidelines that allow landscapes, whether unique or commonplace, to evolve without being destroyed. As I see it, therefore, there is an obvious need for an ethics applicable to regional and landscape planning and management. The new ethics of landscape must be based on the ethics of responsibility, taking into account the dignity of nature, the rights of future generations to enjoy quality landscapes and the rights and duties of today's citizens whose interventions transform landscapes and with them their collective identity, their quality of life, their physical and social welfare and, in short, their happiness. The present research study carries out a contrastive analysis between two corpora of legal opinion columns as special types of genres, with a view to assess their opposing patterns of impersonality—authorial detachment—and attitude—emotion, judgment, appreciation, taking as a point of departure appraisal theory, or the interpretation of Halliday's Systemic-Functional Linguistics by the so-called Sydney School. The long-established perspective is that legal genres are highly impersonal; authoritative instruments representing an intentional exercise of elitist and exclusionary practices. However, the hypothesis embedded in (...) the present study is that some texts, such as news editorials and op-eds, constitute hybrid genres where the writer makes use of all kinds of inducement devices to support his/her theses with effectiveness and credibility, nonetheless retaining one of the basic traits of monogloss legal discourse: impersonality. However, it is hypothesized that this hybridity is to take place in different degrees, in tune with the influence exerted by legal system that constitutes the background of each corpus. To prove such a point, 40 legal op-eds—roughly, a thirty-five-thousand-word corpus in English and Spanish overall—were scrutinized, having been extracted from the specialized legal sections of two national newspapers of undisputed prestige as opinion-formation media. Through a contrastive study, the purpose of the present work was set to describe, explain and assess how lexicogrammar devices unveil interesting differences between the expression of impersonality and attitude in legal opinion columns as genres in either language, hence reflecting different ways in which the law is envisioned in each of the particular legal systems they belong to. The nineteen-nineties saw the so-called “deliberative turn in democracy”, which was taken up by a large number of democracy theorists. This paper sets out: 1) to analyse why this turn took place; 2) to classify the different proposals of deliberative democracy into two models (D1 and D2), in view of their epistemological effectiveness (model D1 assumes the pattern of Rawls’ political liberalism, and model D2, Habermas’ Theory of Discourse); 3) to display the superiority of D2 over D1; 4) to point (...) out certain shortcomings in Habermas’ deliberative-discursive politics and to propose a model of democracy which will enable these to be improved on, to be known as “communicative democracy”. For this issue of JBE, Zyphur and Pierides :1–16, 2017) have written a paper on a concept that they have labeled relational validity. The purpose of the paper and of their advocacy for the concept of relational validity is to improve the way that quantitative research is done by expanding our understanding of its ethics-laden aspects. I agree entirely with the authors that every decision regarding QR is an ethics-laden one and that our research as a whole would be improved (...) by recognition of this fact. I disagree with the authors regarding some of the ways that this improvement might be brought about. (shrink)

This paper aims to clarify the nature and contents of 'civil ethics' and the source of the binding force of its obligations. This ethics should provide the criteria for evaluating the moral validity of social, legal and morally valid law. The article starts with observing that in morally pluralist Western societies civil ethics already exists, and has gradually started to play the role of guiding the law. It is argued that civil ethics should not be conceived as 'civic morals' which (...) is in fact rather 'state ethics', nor as 'public ethics' which is said to reach its perfection when it becomes law, nor as ethics applicable primarily to the basic structure of a society (political liberalism), but instead as a citizens' ethics. Subsequently the paper attempts to show what the contents of this ethics are, and which ethical theory would be able to ground its obligations. (shrink)

La conciencia moral personal es una de las claves de bóveda de la vida moral. Darwin llega a afirmar que constituye la diferencia más importante entre el hombre y los animales inferiores. Y, sin embargo, las propuestas filosóficas más relevantes de nuestro tiempo no se ocupan de ella expresamente, tal vez porque, como decía Aranguren, han primado la ética intersubjetiva sobre la intrasubjetiva. Pero sin reconstruir esa ética intrasubjetiva, se diluye la vida moral, tanto personal como social. En este trabajo (...) intentamos dilucidar en qué consiste la conciencia moral personal, cuáles son sus bases neurobiológicas, y si bastan para explicar su lugar indeclinable en la vida moral.
